About Barbados.
Barbados is a coral island, situated just east of the Caribbean sea. It is largely covered by a layer of coral and it is low and flat except for the north central part of the island. There is little surface water and it is almost encircled by coral reefs. The population of 280,000 friendly inhabitants and a pleasant climate, makes it a paradise for tourists.
Weather
The climate is tropical with a rainy season from June to October. The dry season is from December to May. There are heavy rainfalls in the rainy season but Barbados does not have any natural rivers. They pump water from subterranean caverns. The average temperature in Barbados is 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celcius).
Economy
The porous soil and moderate warmth are excellent for the cultivation of sugarcane, which was historically the island's main business. Today, sugar and molasses remain important products and are the country's largest exports. The healthful climate makes it a very popular tourist resort, and tourism is now the country's largest industry. Manufacturing and banking are growing sectors of the economy. The United States, other Caribbean islands and Great Britain are the main trading partners.
Culture
One of the culture’s influences is of the English and it is more noticeable on this island than on other islands in the Caribbean. A good example is their national sport: cricket. On the other hand one will see the great influence of the Africans, as a result of the slave business with Africans. The lasting effect of their influence can be seen in the colorful arts, crafts and music of the island. Cropover Festival is the largest cultural celebration in Barbados and celebrates the traditional harvesting of the sugarcane crops.
